Amazon beats Google to top spot as the most in-demand company in the UK

Amazon is the most popular employer in the UK in 2019, according to the latest Glassdoor report.

The e-commerce giant beat Google to the top spot, with job-seeker interest remaining consistently high over the last 12 months.

The firm is the most desirable employer not just in the UK but Germany too, according to separate Glassdoor research.

Google takes second place, while hospitality company Marriott International is at third and London-based professional services Ernst & Young (EY) claims fourth spot, being the first “big four” professional services and accountancy firms to make the ranking. Barclays rounds out the top five.

Investment bankers JP Morgan is the sixth most desirable employer in the UK.

Facebook comes seventh, closely followed by computer hardware company IBM, consulting firm Capgemini and the second of the big four firms KPMG.

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) is the third of the big four accounting firms to make the list, coming in at number 11 with next slots taken by automators Siemens, Deloitte, Apple and investment bank UBS.

Glassdoor’s data shows technology and finance firms are increasingly hiring from the same talent pool, with both industries fighting for skilled analysts, engineers and developers.

But tech firms are winning the popularity contest, with six making the 15 most in-demand companies compared with just three finance companies.

Consulting is the most in-demand industry after technology, with four companies making the list.

All consulting firms peaked in popularity in October, which is usually when their popular graduate schemes open to applicants. This indicates job-seekers are spending time finding out what others have to say about these businesses before applying.
