'Giving Tuesday' event raises $171,078 for charities

Dec. 3—WILKES-BARRE — Several last-minute pledges came in Thursday and after AllOne Charities provided its matching dollars, the almost final tally for Giving Tuesday donations totaled $171,078.

John Cosgrove, executive director at AllOne Foundation and Charities,m said he expects a few more gifts to come in over the next week or two.

"I imagine the total will go up by about $1,000," Cosgrove said.

According to AllOne Charities, $40,000 was the matching dollars total from AllOne Charities.

Ten organizations were randomly picked to receive a bonus of $1,000 and the winners were: United Neighborhood Centers, NEPA Inclusive, Wyoming Valley YMCA, North Central Sight Services, Maternal Family Health Services, St. Josephs, Candy's Place and the Northeast Cancer Institute, Catherine McAuley Center, and Meals on Wheels NEPA.

The $171,078 was raised as follows:

—$121,078 raised by the participating organizations.

—10,000 "Random Acts of Kindness" donated by Highmark Foundation ($5,000); $1,000 each from Toyota of Scranton, Coterra, One Point, Luzerne Foundation and the Scranton Area Foundation.

—$40,000 donated by AllOne Charities.

Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement, unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities.

AllOne Charities identified 46 nonprofits that will receive up to $1,000 each to complement their overall fundraising efforts on that day. The community was invited to donate to these participating charities:

Cosgrove said nonprofits are making a difference in the opioid crisis, food security, gaps in autism services, mental and behavioral services, and for women and children.
