Girls soccer: All Saints prevails in OT in 2A-7 semis; LCS Fort Meade also win

LAKELAND — All Saints and Victory Christian seemed destined to go penalty kicks to determine their match. All Saints dominated in offensive chances, but Victory Christian's feisty defense along with a tremendous effort in goal by senior Alaina Fountain kept the game scoreless into the first overtime.

However seventh-grader Lizzy Fischer's scored about four minutes into the first overtime period and All Saints went on to defeat Victory Christian, 1-0, on Monday afternoon in the semifinals of the Class 2A, District 7 tournament at Lakeland Christian.

All Saints (11-4-1) will play Lakeland Christian for the district title at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at Lakeland Christian.

Fischer's goal came when she got the ball inside the box got to the right of Fountain in front of the goal post. She made a move to escape a defender and then buried her shot for her fifth goal of the year.

"I was scared because it was on my bad foot, and I was hoping," Fischer said. "I was so excited when it went in."

In the regular-season meeting between the two teams, the match ended in a 2-2 tie. This match again ended regulation in a tie, only this time a scoreless tie.

"This was a coach's nightmare where you feel like you're controlling the run of play, your getting some shots, but they get one, that's all it takes," All Saints coach Bruce Strine said. "You sweat bullets wondering if is there going to be one against us that gets by."

All Saints is a young team that starts five or six middle schoolers and is especially young on offense.

Fischer, along with fellow seventh-graders Sydney Rasnake and Kaya Carli, eighth-grader Anya Riskin and senior Alexandra Thuren kept putting pressure on Victory's defense but couldn't break through.

"It was pretty tense, especially because out touches weren't doing so good at the beginning, but we did begin to pick up the pace, and it just began to get better," Fischer said.

Victory Christian had a couple of good scoring chances off corner kicks after Fischer's goal but couldn't break through.

2A-7: Lakeland Christian 6, Santa Fe Catholic

Maddie Lopez scored twice and added an assist to as Lakeland Christian cruised to a semifinal victory. Ella Williams, Gretchen Caswell, Destinee Carroll and Ori Gotauco also scored one goal each. Carly Sabat had two assists, and Gotauco, K.J. Straub and Carr had one assist each.

LCS (15-2-2) led 5-0 at halftime.

7A-6: Durant 6, Winter Haven 0

The Blue Devils were in the game into the second half as Rachel Horn's goal was the only score of the first half that gave Durant a1-0 lead.

Winter Haven's best scoring chance came when the match match was scoreless when Jordyn Frazier's shot went high from inside the box.

In the 48th minute, Addi Kapustiak scored to make it 2-0. Durant then put away Winter Haven four minutes later when Kendal Vician and Mykala Ulrich scored a minute park.

Horn's second goal just before the second-half water break and Emily Hein scored to close out the scoring.

3A-6: Fort Meade 6, Avon Park 1

Lizbeth Perez and Audrey Slater each scored two goals to lead the Miners to a dominating victory in the 3A-6 district semifinals.

Yanily Cortez and Marisela Martinez each added a goal apiece.

In the other semifinal match, Lake Placid defeated Frostproof 3-0. Frostproof finished the season 7-8-2.

Fort Meade (8-11-2) will play Lake Placid in the championship match at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday night in Fort Meade.
