High school sports: P.K. Yonge, Buchholz hustle to schedule girls soccer match

Friday night didn't pan out as scheduled for Buchholz and P.K. Yonge's girls' soccer programs.

Buchholz (12-3-2) was slated to take on East Ridge, but that game was called off due to coronavirus-related concerns within the Knights' program.

Meanwhile, P.K. Yonge (10-1-2) was anticipating a matchup with Florida State University High, but that game was also nixed.

"We were supposed to play FSU, which would have been just the challenge we were looking for before the district tournament starts next week, said P.K. Yonge head coach Rebecca Schackow in an email. "But the weather radar looked bad, so the ADs called off the game early in the day since the journey from Tallahassee is so far."

But the Bobcats and Blue Wave were still itching to play. And when word got out that they both faced cancelations, the two teams worked quickly to make a match happen.

Buchholz athletic director George Atohi said the game was scheduled around lunch time for a 5:30 p.m. kickoff at Citizens Field.

"When the Buchholz coach (Bryan Hantak) contacted me to see if we could play their team tonight, I felt so grateful," Schackow said. "We were given a great opportunity to play a high level team. It was a fast paced, well-executed game by both sides."

The matchup proved to be an intense one, as the game ended in a scoreless tie.

But with the postseason approaching for both teams, getting the additional experience was important.

"I am thankful for tonight's game on many levels," Schackow said.

Friday night's last-minute match was the regular-season finale for both teams. Now, the Bobcats and Blue Wave await their district seedings in their respective tournaments.
