ONAWAY – It wasn’t the best performance by any means, but the Onaway girls basketball team once again did enough to come out on top.

Fueled by solid defense and enough offense, the Lady Cardinals won a fifth straight contest by capturing a 52-47 victory over Pickford in a non-conference matchup at home on Monday.

“You could tell it was a Monday, very low energy and intensity on both sides,” said Onaway coach John George. “We struggled to make shots all over the place inside and out. Madilyn (Crull) played with a lot of energy tonight as well as Ema (DeMaestri) on both sides of the ball. We really struggled to get momentum and run away with the game.”

Sophomore Charlotte Box led the Cardinals with 16 points, while Crull and DeMaestri also reached double figures with 13 and 10 points respectively. Kailyn George finished with eight and Marley Szymoniak added five.

Onaway (13-3, 10-2), currently second place in the Ski Valley Conference, travels to face league leader Gaylord St. Mary (14-2, 12-0) on Wednesday.

Ferraiuolo, Burt Lake NMCA cruise at Wolverine

WOLVERINE – A near triple-double performance by senior Brooke Ferraiuolo led the way for the Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian Academy girls basketball team, which captured a 59-6 victory at Wolverine on Monday.

Ferraiuolo finished with 26 points, nine assists and eight rebounds to lead the Lady Eagles (12-4, 8-1 Northern Lakes Conference), who received 15 points and eight rebounds from Otillia Styburski, and 12 points and seven boards from Alexis Fosmore.

“I was happy to see the girls take this game serious and have a strong start defensively,” said NMCA coach Josh Ferraiuolo. “It led to a lot of turnovers and transition points. Even though we were shorthanded tonight being down two starters, it was nice to see other girls step up and not let the defense fall off. These games are nice every once in a while, because it lets us empty the bench and give everyone a lot of playing time. I’m pretty sure everyone was able to get in the scoring book tonight. I’m looking forward to the rest of the week when our competition gets tougher to see how we respond. I do like where we are headed.”
