GIRLS HOOPS: Panthers roll to win in opener
Dec. 3—EUGENE — In terms of making a first impression, the South Medford girls basketball team had quite the good one Friday night.
Senior Donovyn Hunter and freshman Taylor Young each scored 17 points to lead a balance South Medford attack in an 89-41 blowout win over Wilsonsville to open play at the Luke Roth Tipoff Showcase at Sheldon High.
Hunter, playing in her first game since officially signing with Oregon State, also led the Panthers (1-0) with five assists and seven steals.
"They played very unselfishly and everybody played a lot of minutes," said South Medford head coach Tom Cole of his team, one that includes six freshmen this season. "The young players, they all contributed. It was a great team effort because everybody contributed."
South finished with five players in double figures, as senior Kendall Fealey scored 16 points and sophomore Sara Schmerbach and freshman Jordan Barlow each had 10.
Junior forward Kim Ceron added eight points and three blocks, while senior Tatum Schmerbach had five points and five assists and freshman Mayan Akpan pulled down a team-high eight rebounds for the Panthers, who led 55-24 at the half.
South Medford finished with 26 steals as a team.

OREGON CITY 55, NORTH MEDFORD 26: At Oregon City, turnovers proved to be North Medford's undoing as Oregon City pulled away in the second half.
Sophomore forward Caileigh Raines pulled down 16 rebounds to go with five points for the Black Tornado (0-1), which outrebounded the Pioneers 30-27 but committed 26 turnovers.
North Medford senior guard Ali Stevens had eight points and three rebounds before fouling out in the fourth quarter.

GRANTS PASS 48, CRATER 31: At Grants Pass, Grants Pass outscored Crater 21-2 in the first quarter and never looked back to claim its second straight win at the Grants Pass Kick-Off Tournament.
Sophie Mock scored 12 points and Brooke Anderson chipped in 11 for the Cavers (2-0), who were able to hold a 28-9 lead at the break.
Sage Winslow finished with 13 points and five steals for Crater (1-1).

EAGLE POINT 47, HOOD RIVER VALLEY 29: At Redmond, after shaking off first-game jitters, Eagle Point was able to get out in transition in the second and third quarters to establish some separation and claim the opener of the Central Oregon Tip-Off Classic.
The Eagles (1-0) will close the two-day round robin tournament Saturday against host Redmond.
Senior Morgan Dole paced a balanced Eagles' scoring attack with nine points, while freshman Jill Garlitz dropped in eight and Makynlee Schauffler had seven.

Maddie Ward scored seven of her team's nine points in the first quarter for St. Mary's (0-1) and finished with 15 points.
