Girls basketball roundup: KMS picks up a fundamental win over ACGC

Nov. 30—KERKHOVEN — Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg thrived in the fundamentals in its season opener Tuesday.

The Fighting Saints were 22 of 32 from the free-throw line in a 55-41 girls basketball victory over Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City.

Three KMS players finished in double figures, led by Josie Gjerde's 13 points. Madelynn Luft had 11 points and Acelynn Hacker added 10 in the victory.

The Fighting Saints built a 29-20 lead at halftime. Up 11-10 midway through the opening half, KMS pulled away with an 8-0 run, capped off by a 3-pointer by Gjerde.

Ruby Klinger was the Falcons' top scorer with 12 points. Mikaili Johnson and Taylor Frericks both had seven points in the loss.

KMS heads to Dawson-Boyd on Friday for its Camden Conference opener. ACGC is back on the road Friday for a non-conference tilt with Montevideo.

New London-Spicer opened with a strong defensive effort to beat West Central Area at Barrett.

The Wildcats fueled their offense with their defense, taking a 41-15 halftime lead.

Sisters Avery and Dakota Rich led NLS with 21 and 17 points, respectively. Each hit three 3-pointers. Senior guard Jaden Coahran also paced the Wildcats with 11 points, six rebounds, four assists and seven steals.

Macy Grosc had 18 points and Claire Stark added 16 for WCA.
