GIRLS BASKETBALL: Bemidji coach Steve Schreiber takes job at Brandon/Evansville

May 17—BEMIDJI — After six years leading the Bemidji High School girls basketball program, head coach Steve Schreiber announced via Facebook on Monday that he is leaving his post.

Schreiber, who joined the program in 2016-17 and coached the Lumberjacks to two Section 8-3A championship game appearances, said he is taking the identical position at Brandon/Evansville, a Class A school near Alexandria.

Under Schreiber, BHS posted an 80-77 overall record and had three winning seasons. His best year came in 2019-20, when Bemidji went 19-9 and reached the section final for the first time in a decade.

Schreiber coached the Jacks

back into the Section 8-3A title game in 2021,

as well. BHS fell to Alexandria both times.

Other notable highlights of Schreiber's tenure included

a landmark win over rival Alexandria in January 2022

— the program's first since 2013 — and his trademark "Chaos Unit," a five-player collection of underclassmen meant to enter the game in short stints and disrupt an opponent's flow.

Bemidji most recently went 12-15 in 2021-22, the team's first year after getting bumped up to Class 4A. The Lumberjacks defeated St. Cloud in a play-in game before losing to top-seeded St. Michael-Albertville in the first round of the Section 8-4A Tournament.

Likewise, Brandon/Evansville also went 12-15 last winter. The Chargers, who play in Section 6A, lost in the section quarterfinals against Hancock, the eventual state champion. Brandon/Evansville has two section titles all-time: 1999 and 2000. The Chargers won the Class A state championship in 1999.

Schreiber came to Bemidji in 2016 and replaced Larry Dahl as head coach. Prior to that, Schreiber coached for seven seasons at Menahga and went 75-106.
