Girls Basketball: Astoria 53, Scappoose 44

Feb. 8—For the second time in less than two weeks, Scappoose put up a battle, but Astoria escaped with another hard-earned win Tuesday night on the Indians' home court, a 53-44 decision in a Cowapa League girls basketball game.

Scappoose led for much of the first half, and even extended the lead to 26-16 in the opening minute of the third quarter.

But the Lady Fish reeled off an 11-0 run, highlighted by a Maitlin Young 3-pointer to grab a 27-26 lead.

The Indians stayed close, trailing 33-31 following a 3-point shot by Peyton Lennox.

Shelby Bruney scored 17 points to lead Astoria, including a 3-pointer shortly after Lennox's, sparking a 7-0 run, and the Fishermen never trailed again.

Now holding a three-game lead in the league standings with three games remaining, Astoria (9-0) has clinched at least a share of the league title with Scappoose (6-3). The Lady Fish can make it official with just one win in upcoming home games against Tillamook (0-8) and St. Helens (3-6).
