Georgia QB, former Michigan State football commit D'wan Mathis enters transfer portal

Georgia redshirt freshman quarterback D'wan Mathis has entered the NCAA transfer portal.

Mathis, the former Oak Park star, played in four games this season for Georgia as the Bulldogs have struggled for consistent play at the position. He is 12 for 30 for 89 yards passing, one touchdown and three interceptions. He has ran for 17 yards on 18 carries.

He left the team over this past weekend.

Now a 6-foot-6, 205-pounder, Mathis was a four-star prospect and the No. 11 pro-style quarterback in the class of 2019. He was committed to Michigan State football in 2018, but later withdrew that pledge and committed to Ohio State.

Once "100%" committed to Ohio State, even after Urban Meyer retired and the Buckeyes promoted Ryan Day, Mathis decommitted from Ohio State and signed with Georgia at the start of the early signing period in late 2018, citing a chance to play early in his college career.

Mathis suffered a medical emergency last year when he needed surgery for a brain cyst in May 2019 that had fluid build up in his head. Georgia athletics doctor Ron Courson diagnosed the problem and helped rush Mathis to surgery. Mathis was back working out with the team two months later.

Mathis was redshirted last season.
