Georgetown tops UConn in baseball; Eastern baseball, softball win
May 21—In a game full of big hits, Nolan Matsko provided the biggest of them all for the Georgetown baseball team.
The senior's RBI double in the bottom of the 10th gave the Hoyas a 14-13 walkoff win over No. 16 UConn in Big East play Friday at Shirley Povich Field in Rockville, Maryland.
Georgetown (31-22, 10-10) held a 12-8 lead entering the ninth inning. But the Huskies (43-12, 16-4) weren't finished.
Korey Morton and T.C. Simmons drew bases loaded walks to make it 12-10. Freshman Matt Garbowski smacked a three-run double down the right field line to give the Huskies a 13-12 lead.
Jake Hyde homered in the bottom of the ninth to setup Matsko's heroics in the 10th.
ECSU: Luke Broadhurst (Stafford) had two hits, including a clutch two-run double in the sixth, to lead top-seeded and No. 1 nationally-ranked Eastern Connecticut State to a 10-7 win over fourth-seeded Swarthmore in the opening game of the NCAA Division III tournament Rochester, New York Regional Friday.
The Warriors (40-3) will play third-seeded Middlebury this afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
SOFTBALL
ECSU: Cassie Woods' RBI single in the bottom of the eighth proved to be the game's only run as No. 3 nationally-ranked Eastern Connecticut State topped No. 16 Randolph-Macon 1-0 in Game 1 of the NCAA Division III tournament best-of-three Mansfield Super Regional series.
Alyssa Vilchez led off the bottom of the eighth with a single for the Warriors (42-5) before advancing to second on Carolyn Biel's sacrifice. With two outs, Woods stepped up to the plate. She smacked the first pitch she saw into center field to bring home Vilchez.
Woods and Vilchez each had two hits. Teammates Brooke Matyasovsky and Alexis Michon each had one.
Michon (22-1) was also the winning pitcher. She went all eight innings, allowing four hits while striking out 11 and walking two. Gracie Ellis (22-6) allowed six hits and struck out 10 for Randolph-Macon (35-10).
Game 2 is today, with first pitch at Clyde Washburne Field set for 10 a.m. If necessary, a winner-take-all Game 3 will begin at 12:30 p.m.
