George Clooney proposed to Amal 'out of the blue,' recalls shock of learning they were having twins

Maybe accepting a proposal from George Clooney would be a no-brainer for most, but the actor recalled his now-wife Amal Clooney taking "a long time" to say yes.

"We never talked about marriage when we were dating, and I asked her out of the blue," Clooney told CBS Sunday Morning. "Took her a long time to say yes. I was on my knee for, like, 20 minutes. I finally said, 'Look I'm going to throw my hip out.' "

Eventually, Amal, a human rights lawyer, said yes. The two married in Venice in 2014.

"There is no question that having Amal in my life changed everything for me," he said. "No question about it. It was the first time that everything that she did and everything about her was infinitely more important that anything about me."

Another big life event that Clooney, 59, didn't see coming: the birth of their "knucklehead" 3-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella. The OB/GYN told George and Amal they were having a baby boy ("Fantastic," Clooney remembers thinking) and then announced they would be welcoming another baby.

"I was up for one," Clooney joked. "I'm old. All of a sudden it's two and it's hard to get me to not talk, but I sat there for, like, 10 minutes just staring at this piece of paper," presumably an ultrasound image showing two babies. "But I'm so glad they have each other. It's unbelievable."

Like the rest of us, quarantine has led Clooney to pick up some new pastimes to stay busy while at home, like staining his doors and doing the family's laundry. But while some of us have been trying our hand at DIY haircuts for the first time, the actor is an old pro: He says he's been cutting his own hair for 25 years using the Flowbee vacuum haircut device of As Seen on TV fame.

"My hair's really like straw, you know? So it's easy to cut," he said. "You can't really make too many mistakes. ... My haircuts take literally two minutes."
