Garrett Hebl helps Loboes to 5-0 start on both sides of the ball

Sep. 28—LAMOURE — Through the first six games of the 2022 Class B football season, the LaMoure/Litchville-Marion Loboes have outscored their opponents 263-26 with five consecutive shutouts, and one of the players who has played a big role in that is senior fullback and linebacker Garrett Hebl.

"Garrett brings a lot, even since he was a freshman, just being a difference maker for us, both offensively and I think mostly over the course of his career on defense," Loboes head coach Andy DelaBarre said. "He's a great leader by example, he instills great toughness, just by the way he plays and I think what other players around him are trying to be as well, so just kind of a natural knack to be a good football player."

During his senior season, Hebl has 88 total tackles, six tackles for loss and one quarterback pressure. On the offensive side of the ball, Hebl has seven receptions for 131 yards and a touchdown and five carries for 37 yards and a touchdown.

Hebl said he wants to continue to work on his blocking and hopes the team will install new plays that help him get more runs through the rest of the season.

Hebl was also called upon to pass in the Loboes' most recent game against May-Port-C-G, completing a 31-yard pass to Tate Mart.

"I got pitched the ball and I looked up and Tate was going across the field with nobody by him and I just threw the ball," Hebl said.

Despite his success on offense, Hebl said he prefers to play on the defensive side of the ball. He said his mentality doesn't change as he likes to put in maximum effort and speed during every play regardless of what side of the ball he's on.

"(I) enjoy trying to get people out of the endzone as much as possible," Hebl said.

Football is not the only sport that Hebl succeeds in as he is a two-time state champion wrestler and helped lead the Loboes baseball team to the championship game of the state tournament. DelaBarre credited Hebl's success on the gridiron to his athleticism and workouts that come from playing the other two sports. DelaBarre said Hebl's biggest strengths are his field vision and his toughness.

"Wrestling really helps me with the physicality and tackling in football, and baseball keeps me in shape right before football season," Hebl said.

DeLaBarre said one of the best parts about Hebl on the field is his versatility.

"He does a great job as a fullback and leading the way for Brady (Lettenmaier) and any of our backs, with great protection," DelaBarre said. "But also he's got great hands as a receiver, we can spread him out and run routes with him, he can come out of the backfield and catch but I think also his ability to run the football. I mean the toughness that he has on defense, I think that comes across the side of the field for offense and when he does run, he runs with great pad level and just great toughness and I think there's three different aspects to that he can do really well and that's block, run and catch."

The Loboes are back in action at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, when they take on Hankinson. In order for the Loboes to continue their winning ways, Hebl said he and his teammates have to not look ahead and continue to make sure they are getting the details right.
