Game day updates: Toledo 22, Ball State 12 -- final

Sep. 25—MUNCIE, Ind. — It took one week after a disastrous loss for Toledo to occupy the catbird seat in the Mid-American Conference.

The Rockets put the Colorado State debacle behind them in a 20-12 victory at defending MAC champion Ball State, which was a heavy favorite to repeat.

In winning, it appears that Dequan Finn has played himself in the starting quarterback role by consistently moving the offense and leading multiple scoring drives.

Third quarter

Toledo had an opportunity to extend its lead in the third quarter, but a Carter Bradley interception and a missed Thomas Cluckey field goal denied the Rockets.

UT's defense stood tall, though, forcing multiple Ball State punts.

Second quarter

One hundred thirty-nine of Toledo's 223 yards have come on two plays.

It adds up to a 14-9 halftime lead, as the Rockets added a 70-yard Dequan Finn touchdown run in the second quarter.

With seven seconds left in the first half and Ball State inside the red zone, quarterback Drew Plitt scrambled and failed to throw the ball away before the clock ran out, wasting an opportunity for a field goal.

Ball State has three field goals.

First quarter

Toledo's big-play offense showed up on the first series at Ball State.

The Rockets connected on a 69-yard touchdown pass — Carter Bradley to Devin Maddox — on their third play of the game to put UT in front 7-3.

Toledo leads 7-6 after one quarter.
