G4S driver jailed for four years for stealing almost £1m from own van
A G4S driver has been sentenced to more than four years in prison for stealing almost £1 million in cash from his own van.
Joel March, 36, was jailed at Inner London Crown Court for four years and eight months on Friday after he admitted to fleeing with deposit boxes having abandoning the cash-in-transit vehicle.
The blue armoured van with G4S logos sat on a double yellow line on Larkhall Rise in Clapham, for eight hours before police were alerted, The Sun reported at the time.
March was supposed to transport 48 container bags of cash to various addresses in central London but disappeared with 43 of them containing £889,440.
The Metropolitan Police’s elite Flying Squad unit launched an investigation and March was arrested on suspicion of theft in neighbouring Brixton the following day.
March, of Rectory Grove, Clapham, admitted theft by employee of more than £900,000 at Camberwell Green Magistrates’ Court in April.
Prosecutor Alex Agbamu told a hearing at Inner London Crown Court in May: ‘The total amount is around the £900,000 mark – £880,000 is still missing and unaccounted for.’
He added: ‘The day after he committed the theft, he went to JD Sports on Streatham High Street and spent £1,400 on sportswear and trainers.’

Alex Agbamu, from the CPS, said: ‘Joel March was a trusted member of staff who abused his position to make a gain of nearly one million pounds in cash.
‘When he was arrested he was found in possession of thousands of pounds and had also bought more than £1,400 worth of clothes and trainers from JD Sports.
‘March will now spend a significant amount of time in prison and will have to live with the consequences of his actions in relation to future employment opportunities.’
March has refused to reveal where the rest of the stolen £860,840 is.
