Friday's HS sports highlights: TCC tops Strasburg, Claymont stuns Garaway, IV shocks Hiland
Zander Sabin fired in 26 points and Jordan Cherry added 10 as visiting Tuscarawas Central Catholic defeated Strasburg 42-38 in an Inter-Valley Conference North Division boys basketball contest Friday night.
The Saints, who also got four points from Adam Decaminada and two from Hunter Sabin to round out the scoring, improved to 9-8, 7-3, while the Tigers dropped to 10-5, 7-2.
Strasburg led 9-7 after the opening quarter, but Central took a 22-16 halftime lead and was on top 33-25 heading to the final frame.
Landon Potopsky led the Tigers with 23 points.
The Strasburg JV team won 38-16 as Joe Fischer led the way with 13 points.
Claymont 49, Garaway 47
Connor Lynch scored 14 points and Nate Barnabi was next with nine as host Claymont stunned Garaway in an IVC South contest.
The Mustangs improved to 3-12 and 1-8, while the Pirates dropped to 10-4, 6-3.
Logan Yoder led the Pirates with 14 points followed by Brady Roden with 12.
The Garaway JV team improved to 13-1 after a 48-37 victory over Claymont. Blaine Raber led the Pirates with 21 points followed by Gabe Amicone with 15. Barnabi led the Mustangs with 8 points.
Indian Valley 51, Hiland 48, OT
Lucas Hagan had 16 points, Isaac Klaserner added 13 and Tanyon McComb put in 12 as visiting Indian Valley knocked off state-ranked Hiland in an IVC South battle at the Reese Center in Berlin.
Indian Valley raised its record to 11-5, 5-4, while Hiland, ranked No. 8 in Division IV, fell to 13-3, 8-1.
The visitors led 12-9 after the first quarter, 23-17 at the half and 31-30 going to the final frame and the teams were tied 45-45 at the end of regulation.
Sammy Detweiler led Hiland with 15 points and Chris Shetler added 12, while Dylan Weaver just missed double figures with nine.
Tusky Valley 56, Sandy Valley 44
Logan Stotzer fired in 30 points and Silas Miller added 16 as host Tusky Valley had big fourth quarter en route to an IVC South win over neighboring Sandy Valley.
Tusky Valley (15-5, 5-4) was on top 12-6 after one quarter, 23-18 at the half and took a 40-35 lead into the final frame where the Trojans pulled away for the win.

Malvern 75, East Canton 54
Mitchell Minor scored 17 points thanks to five 3-pointers and led five players into double figures as state-ranked Malvern downed visiting East Canton in an IVC North battle.
Michael Minor added 16 points and seven rebounds, KJ Thomas and Connor Lefevre each added 11 points and Dylan Phillips put in 10 for Malvern (13-2, 9-0), ranked No. 9 in Division IV.
Malvern led 15-12 after the opening quarter, but opened up a 40-21 lead at the half and was on top 58-42 going to the fourth quarter,
Luke Riley led East Canton (4-11, 3-6) with a game-high 22 points and Landon Demos added 11.
The Malvern JV team won as well.
Buckeye Trail 63, Newcomerstown 24
Host Buckeye Trail rolled to an IVC North win over Newcomerstown.
The Warriors (6-9, 5-5) forced a running clock on the visiting Trojans (2-15, 0-10). Trail outscored Newcomerstown 57-15 after trailing 9-6 in the first quarter.
Trail led 15-9 after the opening quarter, 38-16 at the half and 54-22 going to the final frame.
New Lexington 56, Coshocton 48
Lukas Ratliff scored 15 points, Isaac Dick added 13 and Hunter Kellogg tallied 10 as host New Lexington topped Coshocton in a Muskingum Valley League Small School Division clash.
New Lexington led 19-10 after one quarter. Coshocton got within 19-18, but New Lex closed the half on an 8-2 spurt to take a 27-20 lead into the half and maintained a 40-34 lead after three quarters of play.
Alec Laaper led Coshocton with 14 points and Abe Jarvis scored 12, while Zach Jennings just missed double figures with nine.
Northwest 55, Fairless 35
Northwest stayed on top of the Principals Athletic Conference standings with a win at home over Fairless.
Chase Badger hit four 3-pointers and scored 14 points to lead the Indians and Ian Ziegler added nine.
Bowling
Carrollton vs. Claymont
Host Claymont recorded a sweep of Claymont at Carroll Lanes.
The Carrollton girls improved to 11-2 overall and 5-0 in the Stark County Conference with a 2.450-2,223 win.
Joline Graves led the winners with a 384 series (204-180) and Tara Oberlin followed with a 379 (158-221), while Mackenzie Rummell added a 332 (160-172).
Mya Banks paced Claymont with a 401 (190-211) and Monica Robin added a 275 *158-137) and Rylee Groah posted a 283 (126-157).
The Carrollton boys upper their record to 10-3 and 5-0 in Stark County play after a 2,690-1,815 victory.
Kobe Green paced the winners with a 494 (258-236) and Ian Pallaye posted a 443 (257-186) and Bryce Taylor added a 430 (209-221).
Xan Benedum led Claymont with a 288 (153-135) and Riley Milburn bowled a 272 (161-111), while Hayden Vance had a 262 (168-94).
Indian Valley vs. Dover
Host Indian Valley and Dover split at Cy Young Lanes.
The IV boys won 1,848-1,835 as Frasher Gray led the way with a 332 (164-168) and Daniel Grewell added a 297 (151-146).
Dover was led by Jacob Shanklin with a 340 (188-152) and Colin McGlothin posted a 274 (226-148).
The Dover girls won 1,780-1,656 as Kaylie Gibson rolled a 376 (199-177) and Sydney Zimmerman added a 322 (145-177).
Kiana Stevens led IV with a 313 (121-192) and Zoe Blickensderfer followed with a 312 (134-178).
River View vs. Central Catholic
River View hosted Tuscarawas Central Catholic and swept the Saints at Legacy Lanes on Senior Night.
The Lady Black Bears clawed their way to a 2,230-2,216 victory to go to 7-0 on the season and 5-0 in conference play.
Leading the way for the Bears was freshman Maeve Gentile with games of 211 (personal mark) and 141 for a 352 series. Senior Benni Winland added games of 164 and 167 for a 331 and Emma Ward posted games of 127 and 184 for a 311.
The RV boys sent the seniors out on a home victory defeating TCC by 383 pins.
Leading the way for the Black Bears was senior Caleb Trull breaking the two game individual record that he had previously set earlier in the year. He shot a 451 series.
Wrestling
West Holmes 45, Dalton 20
The Knights topped visiting Dalton as Aaj Roberts, Macin Miller, Grady Toye, Noah Tish, Tucker Kaufman, Hunter Eberhard, Grant Miller, Collin Gardner had wins.
The victory improved the Knights season dual meet mark to a fine 17-1 as they took an 18-0 lead from the start thanks to three forfeits.
“We talked before the dual about Dalton and how physical of a team they are,” Knights head coach Scott Vaughn said following the meet. “I challenged them to match the physicality and push the match. I thought we controlled matches and kept the pace up. This was an excellent match to prepare us to get ready for the regional duals next week.”
Swimming
New Phila vs. Ashland
Visiting Ashland swept New Philadelphia at the Tuscarawas County YMCA.
The Ashland boys won 101-49 and the girls were 110-51 winners.
The wins for the Quakers came as Steven Simpson claimed the 100 Backstroke in 1:03.36 and the boys 400 Freestyle Relay of Kenny Nguyen, Drew Hostetler, Simpson and Brenton Billman won in 3:45.12.
