BOYS BASKETBALL

APPLETON EAST 68, NEENAH 64

NEENAH - The Patriots led by as many as 16 points in the second half before withstanding a furious rally by the Rockets to win their Fox Valley Association opener at Ron Einerson Fieldhouse.

East (2-0 overall, 1-0 FVA) led 57-41 on a 3-pointer from Jackson Parker with just over 9:30 remaining in the second half, but Neenah rallied with a 17-4 run to pull within 61-60 on a pair of free throws from Chevalier Emery Jr.

East clinched the victory by going on an 8-4 run to finish the game, with Joey La Chapell converting on a conventional 3-point play and going 5-for-5 on free throws down the stretch.

“We talked about how we knew that good teams are going to make a run at us so we gotta be prepared to answer the bell,” East coach Paul Bauer said. “So that’s what they were prepared to do and did. Now there are some things to work on, but when you have a complete team effort and an additional motivation to get us going, good things are possible.

“There are great teams in this state and our league is tough as nails. We gotta be ready to go.”

La Chapell led East with 16 points, with Caleb Glaser adding 15 and Zach Steigenberger chipping in 14.

Chevalier Emery Jr. paced Neenah (2-1, 0-1) with 22 points.

KAUKAUNA - The Lightning exploded with 57 second-half points to put away the Ghosts.

Five players scored in double-digits for Appleton North. Max Nelson led the Lightning with a game-high 38 points, Garrett Staszak scored 21 points, Brock Donaldson scored 13 points, and Trent Mullen and Josh Gilbert scored 10 points each.

Chris Morgan and Amari Allen paced Kaukauna with 24 and 21 points, respectively.

FOND DU LAC - The Cardinals got 16 points from Ryker Johnson to defeat the Terrors.

Rocky Barfkneckt added 11 points for Fond du Lac.

Appleton West was led by Mikail Harmison with 16 points. Ezra Brown and Caeden Myers both added 8 points.

FREEDOM 60, WRIGHTSTOWN 54

WRIGHTSTOWN - The Irish built a 15-point lead in the second half and then withstood a comeback by the Tigers that allowed Wrightstown to close to within one point with less than a minute remaining.

Landon VanCalster led Freedom with 23 points. Blake Kortz added 15 points.

Keegan Spees led Wrightstown with 13 points.

APPLETON - The Foxes broke open a competitive game in the second half by outscoring the Spartans by 29 points.

Josiah Butler led Fox Valley Lutheran with 29 points. Isaac Knoll added 24 points and Jackson Papendorf scored 11.

Luxemburg-Casco was led by Peyton Mrotek with 18 points.

Chase Miller led Ozaukee with 17 points. Brett Hamm was right behind with 16 points. Connor Rennicki and Braxton Gahan both scored 11.
