Friday's high school roundup: Scarborough edges Cheverus, moves on to regional final

Oct. 29—Lana Djuranovic's two first-half goals lifted top-ranked Scarborough to a 2-1 win over fifth-seeded Cheverus in a Class A South girls' soccer semifinal Friday night in Scarborough.

The Red Storm (16-0) will face No. 2 Gorham or No. 3 Windham in the regional final Tuesday in Sanford.

Djuranovic connected on a 25-yard blast in the 11th minute, then sent the rebound of an Ali Mokriski corner kick into the net with under five minutes remaining in the first half.

The Stags (12-5) cut into the deficit just before halftime when Annie Vigue scored.

Evelyn Rush made 15 saves for Cheverus, while Sophia Rinaldi stopped three shots for Scarborough.

WAYNFLETE 3, TRAIP ACADEMY 0: Morgan Earls and Iris Stutzman scored in the first half and Lucy Hart put it away with a goal in the second half as No. 5 Waynflete beat eighth-seeded Traip Academy in a Class C South semifinal in Portland.

The Flyers (12-4) will face Maranacook or Old Orchard Beach in the regional final Wednesday in Topsham.

Earls put Waynflete on top midway through the first half when her corner kick found its way through the defense and into the goal. Stutzman made it 2-0 with a 30-yard blast two minutes later.

Hart, after being tripped in the box, converted a penalty kick goal with 27 minutes remaining.

Flyers goalkeeper Ayla Stutzman made three saves, while Lily Stuart stopped 11 shots for Traip (8-9).

NORTH YARMOUTH ACADEMY 15, TEMPLE ACADEMY 0: Angel Huntsman scored three goals in a balanced offense as the top-seeded Panthers (16-0) advanced to the Class D South championship game by defeating fifth-seeded Temple Academy (8-6-2) in Yarmouth.

The Panthers, seeking a fourth consecutive state championship, will take on second-seeded Richmond (12-4) for the regional title at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Freeport High.

Anna Belleau, Leah Dube and Charlotte Harper-Cunningham, usually the goalkeeper, added two goals each for NYA, which led 8-0 at halftime. Vy Tran, Emily Robbins, Ella Giguere, Toree St. Hilaire, Sadie Swenson and Hayden Wienckowski also scored.

BRUNSWICK 1, MT. BLUE 0: Alexis Morin scored the only goal as the top-seeded Dragons (14-0-1) beat the fourth-seeded Cougars (12-3-1) in a Class A North semifinal in Brunswick.

Hannah Lay assisted on Morin's goal, helping Brunswick advance to the regional final Tuesday at Cony High.

Sophia Morin earned the shutout with five saves. Mt. Blue's Caitlin Burke stopped 12 shots.

WINDHAM 1, DEERING 0: Luke Marion scored 9:49 into the game and the sixth-seeded Eagles (13-4) upset the No. 2 Rams (11-2-2) in a Class A South semifinal in Portland.

MT. ARARAT 56, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 6: Shea Farrell scored five touchdowns in the first half as the top-seeded Eagles (8-1) took control early and defeated the fourth-seeded Patriots (3-5) in an eight-man Large School South semifinal at Topsham.

The Eagles will host the regional final next weekend.

Farrell returned a punt 47 yards for a touchdown and added four touchdown runs, including one from 57 yards, as Mt. Ararat built a 36-0 halftime advantage.

YARMOUTH 46, SPRUCE MOUNTAIN 0: Sam Bradford threw for two touchdowns and ran for two scores to power the second-seeded Clippers (9-1) past the third-seeded Phoenix (5-4) in an eight-man Large School South semifinal at Yarmouth.

Spencer LaBrecque returned an interception for a touchdown and also had a touchdown catch. Rufus McVane blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown, and Kai Sullivan caught a TD pass.

OLD ORCHARD BEACH 28, MOUNTAIN VALLEY 16: The fourth-seeded Seagulls (6-2) pulled away in the second half to stun the top-seeded Falcons (7-1) at Rumford and advance to the eight-man Small School South final.

Old Orchard Beach, which lost 48-20 at Mountain Valley earlier this season, led 6-0 at halftime, fell behind 8-6 early in the third quarter, then scored two touchdowns to take a 22-8 lead entering the fourth.

WATERVILLE 22, MORSE 12: Third-seeded Waterville (5-3) scored two touchdowns in the second quarter and pulled away with a key score in the fourth to knock off second-seeded Morse (5-4) in an eight-man Large School North semifinal at Bath.

The Purple Panthers will play at top-seeded Mt. Desert Island in the regional final.

After a scoreless first quarter, Waterville grabbed a 14-6 halftime lead, then held a 14-12 advantage through three quarters.

The Panthers, who also beat Morse 22-8 earlier this month, snapped a two-game losing streak. They defeated MDI 26-20 on the road in September.

FALMOUTH 27, GARDINER 21: The fourth-seeded Navigators (6-3) advanced to the Class B North semifinals by downing the fifth-seeded Tigers (4-5) at Falmouth.

The Navigators will next take on top-seeded Cony (7-2). In a regular-season finale last week, Cony defeated Falmouth 35-28 in triple overtime.

Falmouth led 21-7 at halftime and 27-7 early in the fourth quarter before Gardiner scored twice in the final three minutes.

PORTLAND 42, NOBLE 14: Kennedy Charles had four long touchdown runs and also passed for a touchdown, leading the top-seeded Bulldogs (6-3) past the eighth-seeded Knights (1-8) in a Class B South quarterfinal in Portland.

Charles scored on runs of 60, 47, 80 and 80 yards, then connected with Myles Hang for a 45-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Aidan McGowan added a 72-yard kickoff return for a TD as Portland advanced to the semifinals against Kennebunk.

Noble's Tommy Gagnon had TD runs of 38 and 41 yards in the fourth quarter.

CONY 38, MT. BLUE 13: Dom Napolitano factored in on four touchdowns for the top-seeded Rams (7-2) in a Class B North quarterfinal victory over the No. 8 Cougars (3-6) in Augusta.

The Rams jumped out to a two-score lead in the first quarter with the help of a 20-yard TD run by Napolitano. Napolitano found Jasper Parrilli with a shuttle pass for an 18-yard touchdown to make it 13-0.

Charlie Stevens caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Jayden Meader in the second quarter to cut Mt. Blue's deficit to 13-7. But Napolitano scampered into the end zone again on a 6-yard run later in the second quarter, and Elijah Klaiber had a 6-yard TD run in the third quarter to extend the Rams' lead to 25-7.

After a 1-yard touchdown run by Mt. Blue's Cowan Young, Napolitano rushed for another score, then threw a 22-yard TD pass to Kam Douin.

DIRIGO 26, MARANACOOK 20: The No. 3 Cougars (7-2) scored the winning touchdown with a 17-play, 89-yard drive that took up nine minutes in the fourth quarter in an eight-man Small School quarterfinal against the No. 3 Black Bears (6-3) in Readfield.

Kody Goucher's touchdown on a QB run gave the Black Bears a 6-0 lead with under five minutes remaining in the first quarter.

Charlie Houghton found Dakota Tompkins for a 13-yard pass late in the first quarter to tie the game.

The teams traded big runs in the second quarter. Trenton Hutchinson had a 65-yard run to give Dirigo a 12-6 lead. Owen Dunn responded for Maranacook with a 47-yard TD run to make it 12-12.

It was 20-20 at halftime.
