Freshman dies after falling from 5th-story balcony on campus, Utah college says

A student at a university in Utah died after falling from a fifth-story balcony on campus, officials said.

Peyton Hall “was an involved and loved” freshman at Utah Tech University, according to a statement by the college.

At around 2:30 a.m. on Dec. 4, Hall “tragically fell from a fifth story balcony at Campus View Suites II in what appears to be an accidental death,” the statement said.

His roommates and friends, whom he was with at the time, saw Hall fall 55 feet from the dorm balcony into the center of the courtyard of the horseshoe-style building, according to KSL.

The students called 911 right away, according to the statement.

A Utah Tech Police Department officer was first on the scene, as he was already in the area, according to KSL.

“As the student fell from the fifth story on the inside of the horseshoe, one of the Utah Tech Police Department officers was actually on the south side — or the open side — of the horseshoe and quickly responded around to the other side of the building,” Interim Utah Tech Police Chief Ron Bridge told the outlet.

The officer and first responders “conducted lifesaving measures” but were unable to revive Hall, according to the university’s statement.

Utah Tech University is working with the Southwest Behavioral Health Center mobile crisis team to offer mental health support to students, officials said.

The university welcomes students to seek professional mental health help from the front desk at Campus View Suites II or to dial 988 for immediate support.

“I definitely think that it will affect a large amount of the students in some capacity, but that’s why we want to make sure that all of the students know that the faculty and staff are here for them, that we have our counseling staff on call and ready to meet with students,” Utah Tech Dean of Students Ali Threet told KSL.

Utah Tech University is in St. George, about 120 miles northeast of Las Vegas.
