Four Mustangs finish top 20 at home invitational

Sep. 24—MONROE — Paige Steenhoek led a quartet of PCM runners who finished in the top 20 at the Mustangs' home invitational on Tuesday.

Steenhoek, Tiffani Koonce and Makayla True all were in the top 20 in the girls' 5K race, while Kyle Sanders finished 19th in the boys' race.

The Mustangs trailed Pella Christian by a point in the team race, finishing fourth in the five-team field. Urbandale (16) won the meet while Class 2A No. 11 Davis County (54), Pella Christian (82), PCM (83) and Des Moines Hoover (151) rounded out the field.

Steenhoek finished 10th in the girls' race with a time of 22 minutes, 22 seconds. Koonce was 14th in 23:00 and True finished 17th in 23:37. The top 10 finishers in each 5K race earned medals.

The rest of the varsity runners included Jillian Fairbanks (24:43) in 25th, Taryn Steenhoek (25:15) in 30th, Riley DeVore (25:35) in 31st and Alissa Ives (26:28) in 35th.

Sanders' 19th-place time in the boys' 5K race was clocked at 21:17. The Mustangs did not have enough runners for a team score as Class 2A No. 12 Davis County (31) edged 1A No. 16 Pella Christian (35) by four points to win the team title. Hoover (72) finished third.

Wyatt Vannoy (23:29), Carson Taylor (25:15) and Alex Courtney (29:08) were the other three runners for PCM in 29th, 33rd and 39th, respectively.
