Foundation awards COVID relief funds

Sep. 18—HIGH POINT — The Foundation for a Healthy High Point recently approved a $25,000 award to support COVID-19 emergency relief efforts, as well as two smaller grants to support local efforts focused on education, youth development and food insecurity.

The larger award will support Business High Point as it launches the "It's Our Shot, High Point" education and outreach campaign, said Curtis Holloman, executive director of the private foundation, which invests in the advancement of health and wellness for Greater High Point residents. The campaign promotes vaccination support among business leaders and increased vaccinations among employees.

"This partnership with businesses to join the fight against COVID-19 can help improve vaccination rates in our community," Holloman said. "It comes at a critical time as our rates of infection and hospitalization increase."

The foundation board also approved the following grants:

—$10,000 to the Greater High Point Food Alliance to support the planning and expenses for a communitywide Food Security Summit on Jan. 28 that will focus on the effects of poverty on education, health care and racial inequity, and the interwoven relationships with food security in the Burns Hill, Highland Mills, Washington Street and West End neighborhoods.

—$10,000 to the YMCA of High Point to support the planning to develop two spaces that will be Y Community Learning Centers to help support ongoing academic, social and emotional development.
