Former Mayflower Wind renames itself after the SouthCoast

An offshore wind project with links to Somerset has renamed itself to reflect its connection to the SouthCoast.

The company formerly called Mayflower Wind, which is constructing a wind farm 20 miles south of Nantucket, announced on Wednesday it has renamed itself as SouthCoast Wind Energy LLC.

“We are proud to call the SouthCoast home and recognize the importance this area has to the success of our project,” said Francis Slingsby, SouthCoast Wind's CEO, said in a statement. “SouthCoast Wind remains steadfast in its commitment to being an integral community partner and investing in economic development, education and training.”

Power generated by the SouthCoast Wind turbines will connect to a substation at Brayton Point in Somerset, the site of the former coal-fired power plant that is now being transformed into a hub for wind energy. It will then be connected to the regional power grid.

Construction for the SouthCoast Wind project will intersect with construction of a separate wind-related project at Brayton Point, one that will build a manufacturing plant to produce underground cables for offshore wind farms. A meeting to discuss the potential environmental impacts of the plant is planned for this Thursday in Somerset.
