Forecasters warn of heavy rain and possible flooding in Hampton Roads

As a cold front pushes across eastern Virginia and parts of North Carolina, forecasters warn of potential heavy rainfall and flooding in areas like Hampton Roads.

The National Weather Service in Wakefield says the cold front has moved through the I-95 corridor, bringing heavy showers to central and northern areas of the state. Hampton Roads could receive anywhere between ½ of an inch to 3 inches of rainfall, according to the NWS.

Minor tidal flooding may occur in areas around the Chesapeake Bay and gusty winds will cause small craft advisory conditions through the end of Thursday.

Hampton Roads, including the Peninsula, is expected to receive heavy rains at times, as are the Northern Neck and the Eastern Shore. Residents may experience gusty winds, scattered showers, flash flooding and a few thunderstorms are possible throughout Thursday and possibly Friday.

The NWS says localized flash flooding will be possible Thursday afternoon and that residents should monitor weather updates at www.weather.gov, and the NWS on Twitter and Facebook in case of a weather emergency.
