Florida State football: Three notes from Inside Seminole Football, Norvell reveals practice plans

Inside Seminole Football is back.

The weekly Florida State football show – which features head coach Mike Norvell, director of broadcasting Jeff Culhane and various guests throughout the season – returned Monday at Coosh’s, a restaurant in Tallahassee.

Norvell, defensive end Leonard Warner III and general manager of personnel Darrick Yray joined the show and discussed a variety of topics before the Seminoles begin their final week of preseason camp.

After its players had Sunday and Monday off, FSU will practice every day from Tuesday to Saturday. Then the Seminoles will begin game-week preparations for their Aug. 27 season opener against Duquesne. That game is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. and can be seen on the ACC Network.

FSU beginning Duquesne prep

Norvell laid out what FSU’s final week of preseason camp will look like.

“It’s a big week for us,” Norvell said. “Coming off the scrimmage Saturday night, guys had yesterday off. Today was a day that we came in and made a lot of corrections. We had a couple hours of meetings. And then tomorrow, we will get back into our prep.

“There are still a few situations that we need to install. It’s going to be kind of a modified day where our focus is all going to be on our continued growth and development. And then we will have a little bit of an introduction to Duquesne.

“Then really starting on Wednesday, that’s when we are going to get into our game-week prep. We will simulate what a game week will look like throughout our preparation and getting the guys in the flow of, ‘This is how we are going to practice.’

“And we will break up and get a couple of look teams to present different schemes and things that we might see.”

Darrick Yray settling in as GM, parent

Darrick Yray likely needed to adjust to Tallahassee after spending his first 11 years in college football on the West Coast.

Now he will need to adjust to parenthood.

“Not much sleep, but that’s part of the deal,” said Yray, who became a father last Tuesday. “I’m fired up for it, and I think I’ve gotten a combined six hours in the last four days. So I’m working on it.”

FSU hasn’t slept much on the recruiting trail lately. Since June 11, the Seminoles have received verbal commitments from 11 recruits in the 2023 class. They most recently landed a pledge from Kenton Kirkland, a safety from Raines High in Jacksonville.

Yray offered a closer look at his recruiting philosophy, calling communication the most important aspect of the process.

“Because it takes all of that to be on the same page,” Yray said.

“And if you are not on the same page, you have zero chance of being successful. And especially with the way that recruiting is growing and the staff increasing, communication is the most important piece in the whole deal. Especially with the amount of volume that increases as we go on.”

Warner grateful for FSU experience

Not many FSU players have as much experience as Leonard Warner.

Only tight end Camren McDonald (45) has played in more collegiate games than Warner (44). And Warner is one of just six Seminole players who were recruits as early as the 2017 class. Warner received two extra years of eligibility because of COVID and the season-ending leg injury that he suffered in March of 2021.

Since arriving on campus, Warner has endured two coaching changes, a position switch from linebacker to defensive end before the 2020 season and the aforementioned injury. But Warner chooses to be optimistic about his time in Tallahassee.

In his final season at FSU, Warner could work himself into the defensive end rotation.

“My time at Florida State, someone looking from the outside might say it has been really trying. But I would say it has been a blessing,” Warner said. “I definitely have grown a lot, going through all these staff changes, injuries and everything. It helped me become the man that I am today.

“Recovering from the injury is something that was tough, because I had never been hurt before. It was kind of finding a way to still contribute, to be part of the team, to add my two cents and help where I can. I felt like that was a great opportunity where I could do that type of thing.”
