Florida State focusing on Louisville's Vince Tyra as its new Director of Athletics

Less than a week after Florida State Director of Athletics David Coburn announced his pending retirement, FSU is closing in on naming his successor.

As first reported by Sports Illustrated Sunday and confirmed to the Tallahassee Democrat by multiple sources, current Louisville AD Vince Tyra is a strong candidate to become the new head of the Seminoles' athletic department.

It was first reported Friday that Tyra was a surprise candidate for the FSU AD job.

The University of Louisville has scheduled a special Board of Trustees meeting Monday at 5 p.m. to discuss personnel matters.

DHR International was involved in FSU's search for a new AD after previously helping FSU in its coaching search that ended with Mike Norvell being hired as the new football coach in December of 2019.

Tyra, a Louisville native, has been Louisville's Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics/Director of Athletics since taking over as the interim back in October of 2017. He was named the permanent Louisville AD in March of 2018.

Tyra is set to become FSU's third AD in just over three years.

Coburn took over the position on an interim basis in August of 2018 when Stan Wilcox left to take a position with the NCAA.

Coburn said Wednesday that he's planning on retiring at the end of the 2022 spring semester unless the position is filled sooner than that.
