Florida adds 4,098 coronavirus cases, 66 deaths Sunday
Florida recorded 66 deaths Sunday, the lowest single-day total in months, according to the Florida Department of Health.
Sunday’s addition dropped the weekly death average to about 123 people announced dead per day. In Florida, 32,266 people have died from coronavirus.
The state also added 4,098 coronavirus cases Sunday, bringing the weekly average to about 5,111 cases announced per day. Statewide, 1,944,995 cases of coronavirus have been identified since last March.
About 84,000 coronavirus tests were processed Saturday, resulting in a single-day positivity rate of 5.84 percent.
Vaccinations: As of Sunday afternoon, 3,550,139 people in Florida have been vaccinated against coronavirus, with more than half of those vaccinated having completed their immunization series.
In Hillsborough, 173,231 people have been vaccinated; in Pinellas, 171,183; in Polk, 90,054; in Manatee, 71,386; in Pasco, 78,673; in Hernando, 28,375; and in Citrus, 30,395.
On Sunday, a federal vaccination site in Florida City was overloaded with residents seeking vaccines. People of all ages showed up at the location after eligibility requirements were dropped on Saturday due to low demand, but officials reverted back to Florida’s criteria on Sunday, causing mass confusion.
Hospitalizations: About 3,300 people in Florida are hospitalized with a primary diagnosis of coronavirus, according to the Agency for Health Care Administration. About 670 of those patients are in the Tampa Bay area.
About 25 percent of Florida’s hospital beds and 24 percent of ICU beds were available as of Sunday afternoon. In Tampa Bay, about 24 percent of hospital beds and 22 percent of ICU beds were available.
Cases that resulted in a hospitalization increased by 92 admissions.
Positivity: Florida’s average weekly positivity rate is about 6 percent, according to Johns Hopkins University. It is one of 19 states that fails to meet the World Health Organization recommendation for a 5 percent positivity rate or below before loosening movement restrictions.
When the positivity rate is too high, it can indicate there isn’t enough testing being conducted to capture mild, asymptomatic and negative cases.
Local numbers: Tampa Bay added 703 coronavirus cases and 10 deaths Sunday.
Six deaths were recorded in Pinellas, two in Citrus and one in both Manatee and Polk.
Hernando leads the area with an average weekly positivity rate of 8 percent, followed by Hillsborough and Pasco at 7 percent, Manatee and Polk at 6 percent and Citrus and Pinellas at 5 percent.
As of the latest count, Hillsborough has 113,623 cases and 1,555 deaths; Pinellas has 67,844 cases and 1,494 deaths; Polk has 58,116 cases and 1,183 deaths; Manatee has 32,603 cases and 622 deaths; Pasco has 34,054 cases and 670 deaths; Hernando has 11,612 cases and 408 deaths; and Citrus has 9,882 cases and 417 deaths.
