Florida adds 3,312 coronavirus cases, 83 deaths Monday

Florida added 3,312 coronavirus cases Monday, bringing the total number of infections recorded statewide to 1,948,307.

The weekly case average increased slightly to about 5,341 cases announced per day.

The Florida Department of Health also recorded 83 deaths from the virus. Around 113 deaths are announced per day, based on the weekly average. In Florida, 32,349 people have died from the virus.

Hospitalizations: About 3,300 people in Florida are hospitalized with a primary diagnosis of coronavirus, according to the Agency for Health Care Administration. About 670 of those patients are in the Tampa Bay area.

About 25 percent of hospital beds in Florida and 24 percent of intensive care unit beds were available as of Monday. Locally, about 23 percent of hospital beds and 24 percent of ICU beds were available.

Cases that resulted in a hospitalization increased by 63 admissions.

Positivity: Florida’s average weekly positivity rate is about 12 percent, according to Johns Hopkins University. The positivity rate spiked Monday, up from six percent, after the university changed how it interprets the data, according to a news release.

The program previously used data from the year-long Covid Tracking Project, which ended Sunday. The university now collects public data to generate positivity rates and other coronavirus-related metrics, including information reported by individual states. In Florida, that means non-resident calculations will be included in the positivity rate. Under the Covid Tracking Project, they were excluded.

The World Health Organization recommends a positivity rate of 5 percent or below before loosening movement restrictions. When positivity is too high, it indicates there isn’t enough widespread testing to capture mild and asymptomatic cases.

Local numbers: Tampa Bay added 542 coronavirus cases and six deaths Monday.

Two deaths were in reported in Manatee County. One death each were reported in Hernando, Pasco, Pinellas and Polk counties. There were no new deaths were added in Hillsborough or Citrus counties.

As of the latest count, Hillsborough has 113,794 coronavirus cases and 1,555 deaths; Pinellas has 67,961 coronavirus cases and 1,495 deaths; Polk has 58,205 coronavirus cases and 1,184 deaths; Manatee has 32,694 coronavirus cases and 624 deaths; Pasco has 34,098 coronavirus cases and 671 deaths; Hernando has 11,635 coronavirus cases and 409 deaths; and Citrus has 9,889 coronavirus cases and 417 deaths.
