Florida adds 3,231 coronavirus cases, 33 deaths Sunday

Florida recorded 3,231 coronavirus cases Sunday, bringing the total number of infections detected since March 2020 to 2,269,806.

The state’s weekly case average decreased to about 3,861 cases announced per day. The average has been declining for just over two weeks.

The Florida Department of Health also recorded 33 deaths from the virus Sunday. In Florida, 36,445 people have died since the pandemic began, with about 68 people announced dead per day based on the weekly rolling average.

About 73,000 coronavirus tests were processed Saturday, resulting in a single-day positivity rate of 5.32 percent.

Vaccinations: As of Sunday, 9,265,816 people in Florida have been vaccinated against coronavirus. Of that total, more than seven million are fully immunized.

The number of people vaccinated increased by 62,146 from the day prior.

In Hillsborough, 573,038 people are vaccinated; in Pinellas, 440,992; in Polk, 250,735; in Manatee, 174,871; in Pasco, 210,115; in Hernando, 69,947; and in Citrus, 61,571.

Hospitalizations: About 2,700 people in Florida are hospitalized with a primary diagnosis of coronavirus, according to the Agency for Health Care Administration. About 570 of those patients are in Tampa Bay.

Statewide, about 24 percent of hospital beds and 26 percent of ICU beds were available as of Sunday afternoon. In Tampa Bay, about 24 percent of hospital beds and 24 percent of ICU beds were available.

The number of cases that resulted in a hospitalization increased by 66 admissions.

Positivity: Florida’s average weekly positivity rate is about 7 percent, according to Johns Hopkins University. It is one of 20 states that falls below the World Health Organization recommendation for a 5 percent positivity rate or below before loosening movement restrictions.

When the positivity rate is too high, it indicates there isn’t enough widespread testing to capture mild, asymptomatic and negative cases.

Local numbers: Tampa Bay added 626 coronavirus cases and five deaths Sunday.

Three deaths were recorded in Hillsborough and one was recorded in both Manatee and Pasco.

Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough and Pasco have an average weekly positivity rate of about 7 percent. Manatee and Polk follow at about 6 percent, then Pinellas at about 4 percent.

As of the latest count, Hillsborough has 138,161 cases and 1,767 deaths; Pinellas has 79,881 cases and 1,652 deaths; Polk has 69,056 cases and 1,344 deaths; Manatee has 38,828 cases and 689 deaths; Pasco has 41,638 cases and 774 deaths; Hernando has 14,070 cases and 473 deaths; and Citrus has 14,070 cases and 449 deaths.
