Oct. 20—Tuesday night, the 18th season of "The Bachelorette," featuring fan favorite and St. Louis Park native Michelle Young, debuted on ABC. Here are five things you missed from the premiere.

1. The episode opened with footage of Young teaching her students fractions at Echo Park Elementary School in Burnsville. One boy asks her "How many boyfriends are you going to have?" She sheepishly says "around 30." Her students seem a bit shocked, but another tells her not to change who she is for anyone, which is sound advice from a kid. We also meets her parents in Woodbury. Young says she's inspired by their relationship, which remains strong and loving after all these years.

2. The action then moves to California at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort and Spa in Indian Wells. We see Young's 30 potential boyfriends settling into their rooms. For some inexplicable reason, co-hosts Tayshia Adams and Kaitlyn Bristowe decide to meet some of the suitors in advance and dig through their luggage. They find a troubling dossier compiled by Ryan Fox, an environmental consultant. The folder, which features the show's name misspelled on the cover, includes notes about how to get more airtime on the show and reminders to do things like "pretend to be interested in teacher stuff." Later, after Young has a pleasant meeting with Fox, the co-hosts share the alarming news with Young, who pulls Fox aside, demands to see his paperwork and swiftly sends him packing. One down, 29 to go.

3. One by one, we meet the men vying for Young's affection. Clayton Echard, a medical sales representative, hands Young a yardstick and nervously invites her to spank him with it. Firefighter Daniel Tully pulls up riding a toy firetruck and then is immediately upstaged by another firefighter, PJ Henderson, who arrives in an actual firetruck. Rick Leach, yet another medical sales rep, conceals himself in a room-service cart, with just his head visible on a plate of lettuce. He proceeds to spend most of the episode inside the cart.

4. Two of the men have local ties. Bryan Witzmann — a native of Houlton, Wis., who was briefly signed to the Minnesota Vikings — gets mere moments of screentime and, unsurprisingly, ends up among the seven men who don't get a rose from Young. The other is Hopkins High School graduate Joe Coleman who, prior to the show's taping, had briefly exchanged direct messages with Young about their shared love of basketball before ghosting her. She confronts him, he apologizes, and he gets her final rose of the evening.

5. Sales exec Nayte Olukoya — who tells Young "better Nayte than never" when they first meet — ends up earning Young's first impression rose as well as the episode's first and only kiss. One can only hope Young's students approve.
