We got our first look at the Buffs in “game” action on Saturday when they held their first preseason scrimmage at Folsom Field.

Colorado challenged itself for about an hour and a half with all levels of the depth chart getting some action. Both the offense and defense had their moments, albeit under the preseason rule of limited tackling.

Watching the incoming freshmen play was also a treat. Karl Dorrell has shared plenty of praise about the new Buffs and the youngsters lived up to the hype.

In fact, of the five players that impressed me the most, three of them were freshmen:

Chase Sowell

Jordyn Tyson has gotten the most attention of the incoming freshmen this fall camp but he may have to share the stage after fellow rookie WR Chase Sowell broke out on Saturday. Sowell had three catches for over 70 yards, displaying strong speed and good hands.

Owen McCown

CU’s southpaw slinger got a good deal of play on Saturday. He impressed me with his ability to escape the pocket and avoid negative plays.

“He’s having a really, really good camp for a first year player that just got here this summer,” Dorrell said. “That tells you a lot about what he can digest, just getting here this summer in June and still being in position to compete. He’s really competing for that third spot right now and to do it in such a short order, tells you how fast he is as a smart kid.”

Shakuan Bowser

Bowser was a late addition to Colorado’s 2022 class and the linebacker recorded a QB hurry and a loud tackle.

Mister Williams

One of the defensive highlights was a Mister Williams fumble recovery.

Charlie Offerdahl

Colorado’s No. 3 running back will likely be either Charlie Offerdahl, Victor Venn or Jayle Stacks. All three performed well, but Offerdahl’s ability to keep his speed while shaking off tackles stood out the most to me.

“For Charlie to do what he did today, I’m not surprised at all,” Dorrell said. “I have a lot of confidence in Charlie. Charlie’s going to play for us, and Charlie’s going to continue to do the things that you see him do in practice; he’ll do those on Saturdays too.”
