First tie for Giants in 25 years as they knot Commanders
The New York Giants had not played a game that finished in a tie since Nov. 23, 1997, until Sunday.
The Washington Commanders came into MetLife and scored a late touchdown and PAT to tie Big Blue, 20-20.
Neither team scored in OT and that is how the game ended.
Ties are not that frequent in the NFL anymore with the 10-minute overtime period.
So, when was the last knot for the Giants?
It happened at the then-Jack Kent Cookie Stadium in 1997 against Washington.
In another bizarre coincidence, the Giants finished that day 7-4-1, which is the same record they hold in 2022.
Washington’s mark was close to this year’s but just missed. Washington was 6-5-1 in 1997 after the deadlock and is 7-5-1 now.
The lone touchdowns in that 1997 game, which ended 7-7, were on a run by Gus Frerotte and a Danny Kanell pass to Chris Calloway that tied the game.
Washington’s most recent tie had been in 2016 against the Cincinnati Bengals.
