First-place Rays at Indians: Collin McHugh goes on IL

CLEVELAND — Having moved into a tie for first place in the AL East with the Red Sox, the Rays look to extend their stay atop the division today as they wrap up a four-game series in Cleveland, first pitch at 1:10 p.m.

But they will have to do so without one of their most dependable relievers, as right-hander Collin McHugh was placed on the 10-day injured list due to what the team is calling “arm fatigue.” Lefty Ryan Sherriff, who was already in Cleveland as a member of the taxi squad, was added to replace McHugh.

McHugh has not allowed an earned run over his last 13 appearances, and just one in 19 appearances since returning from the injured list on May 4 after a back strain, with a 0.25 ERA and 54 strikeouts in 36-1/3 innings.

The Rays have won all six games against the Indians this season and 11 in a row overall dating back to May 2019. With a win today, they will match their longest such streak against any one team, having beaten the Orioles 12 straight in 2008.

Lefty Ryan Yarbrough will be on the mound for the Rays, coming off a frustrating outing Monday against Baltimore in which he threw 108 pitches. But Yarbrough said he feels comfortable with his between-starts work and is ready to go.

The Indians are starting rookie right-hander Triston McKenzie.

Rays catcher Mike Zunino was “perfectly fine” after being hit on the knee by a foul ball on Saturday, manager Kevin Cash said, and is not in the lineup due to a scheduled day off.

Today is the 100th game of the season for the 60-39 Rays. They head home this afternoon and open a 10-game homestand Tuesday against the Yankees, Red Sox and Mariners.
