First game on renovated Mitchell High School football field expected in September

The turf project on the Mitchell High School football field is nearly complete but will not be ready for the first home game of the season against Edgewood on Aug. 19, Superintendent Brent Comer informed the Mitchell Community Schools board on Monday.

The field is ready for the artificial surface to be added, however MCS is still waiting on the turf itself to be delivered, which is expected the week of Aug. 15, Comer said. From there, the installation process is expected to take no longer than two weeks.

As the field is being completed, MHS will play any previously scheduled home games on the road, according to Comer.

Comer said he expects the first home game played on the new turf to be the Sept. 16 matchup against Crawford County.

Additionally, MCS has received preliminary drawings of viewing platforms that will be set up between the baseball and softball fields. Contractors have begun moving dirt to both fields. Along with this project, the sign outside of MHS will be replaced, as the software that operates the current sign has become outdated.

Concrete footers are being poured for the new maintenance storage facility, however construction on that project has been delayed and is not likely to start until November.

The MCS board will host its annual budget hearing on Aug. 29 at 5 p.m. at the MCS administration building. Comer said he is pleased with where the budget for next year is, as it has allowed them to consider a decrease to the tax rate, potentially bringing it down to 1.5712 from the previous 1.65519.

Parents of Mitchell Junior High School students are being asked to drop off their children at the front doors of the building, opposed to the side door if they arrive prior to 7:50 a.m.

Thus far this school year, MCS enrollment appears to be up 31 students from last year, assistant superintendent Jessica Jones informed the board Monday.

The MCS board approved the creation of the COSMOS (Collaboration of Shoals, Mitchell and Orleans Schools) advisory board. The first meeting of the board will be held on Aug. 22, 6 p.m. at the MCS administration office.

The board approved the sale of the previous baseball and softball field bleachers to the Lawrence County Fair board, which bid $500 each for them, totaling $1,000.
