Two-alarm fire at Salem auto repair shop sends heavy smoke over skies

A fire at Gerber Collision and Glass, 1365 Broadway NE, created flames and heavy smoke early Monday evening.

The Salem Fire Department received the call at 5:41 p.m., went to a second alarm and had the blaze contained about half an hour later, according to Batallion Chief Ty Gunesch.

Salem Fire spokesperson Gregory Walsh said the fire was in a small shed outside of the main building that included some equipment.

The fire did not make it into the main building, Walsh said.

He said a few cars at the shop were damaged due to the fire.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
