Firefighters are battling a blaze that broke out Tuesday evening in Siskiyou County.

The 97 Fire is burning grass and brush in an area northwest of Highway 97, near the community of Lake Shastina, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

It pushed up against the Lava Fire burn scar, crossing into the scarred landscape in some places, according to the Mount Shasta Fire Department.

7:45 a.m. Thursday: 97 Fire fully contained

The 97 Fire in Siskiyou County is 100% contained at 30 acres, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection reported Thursday morning.

5:45 p.m. Wednesday: Containment grows on 97 Fire

Firefighters worked to build a perimeter around the 97 Fire throughout the day.

The blaze is 80% contained, up from 45% Wednesday morning, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

It remained 30 acres in size since firefighters stopped the fire's forward progress Wednesday morning, Cal Fire said.

11:30 a.m. Wednesday: Evacuations lifted for residents living near 97 Fire

The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office lifted all evacuation orders and warnings for the 97 Fire after firefighters got a foothold on the blaze burning near Lake Shastina.

Crews stopped forward progress on the 97 Fire as it bumped against the 2021 Lava Fire burn scar early Wednesday morning, according to the Mount Shasta Fire Department. The blaze burned a stretch of brush narrow enough for firefighters to see across its width. It raced in a straight line for 30 acres, pushed by the wind.

As of 11:30 a.m., rain moved into the area. That will hopefully help snuff out the flames, according to the Mount Shasta Fire Department.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

8:30 a.m. Wednesday: Containment grows on 97 Fire

A fire burning grass and brush near Lake Shastina in Siskiyou County grew to 30 acres as of Wednesday morning.

The 97 Fire is 45% contained, up from zero Tuesday evening, according to Cal Fire.

Evacuation orders and warnings remain in place, according to the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office.

Crews will continue to work on containment and monitor the fire throughout the day, Cal Fire said. They'll also suppress hot spots — patches in the burn area where there's the greatest risk flames could flare up and rekindle the blaze.

The cause remains under investigation, Cal Fire said.

6:30 p.m. Tuesday: Fire grows to more than 10 acres; evacuations ordered

Cal Fire reported that the fire east of Lake Shastina has grown to more than 10 acres, with zero percent containment.

There was no word as to whether any structures were damaged or were threatened by the blaze, called the Big Springs Fire. The cause of the fire was under investigation.

A temporary evacuation point and shelter has been set up at the Kahtishraam Karuk Wellness Center, 1403 Kahtishraam, Yreka.

Fire crews are working on a 3-acre grass and brush fire northwest of Highway 97 and near the community of Lake Shastina in Siskiyou County, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

The Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office has issued an evacuation order for residents living north of Big Rock Road, south of Juniper Valley Drive, east of Big Springs Road and west of Buck Horn Road and Highway 97.

The evacuation order also includes the area north of Gallup Place and Pine Place Lane, south of Glenwood Place, east of Sherwood Road and west of Juniper Valley Drive.
