UPDATE: A Loveland's employee said the shop will be open for business starting Monday, Jan. 24.

A fire broke out at a 40-plus-year automotive repair shop in Victorville, sending up a thick plume of black and gray smoke Friday morning.

The Victorville Fire Department responded Jan. 21 shortly before 9:30 a.m. “to a reported structure fire in the area near Palmdale and Amargosa Roads,” said city spokesperson Sue Jones.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire coming from the shop, Loveland’s Automotive Service Inc., in the 15200 block of Palmdale Road.

“Crews initiated an aggressive interior attack that prevented the fire from spreading to additional vehicles within the building of origin or to nearby structures,” Jones said.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the blaze was found to be accidental.

The city would not provide further details on the cause or how much damage the shop sustained.

Phone calls to the shop were unsuccessful Friday afternoon.

Loveland’s has been serving the area since 1978, according to its website.

“As far as I know, this is the oldest continually-operated auto service with the same name in the same location in the High Desert,” owner Mike Loveland told the Daily Press in 1999.

Loveland’s won first place in 2020 for the “Auto Repair - Independent” category in the newspaper’s Best of the Desert contest.
