Fire damages house on 12th Avenue near Mill Street, closes roads Monday morning in Eugene

A house fire Monday morning closed down parts of East 12th Avenue and Mill Street in Eugene while Eugene Springfield Fire Department responded.

A fire engine was clearing a medical call in the area when the call came in just before 8:30 a.m. in the 300 block of 12th Avenue, Battalion Chief Chris Paskett said, at the house just east of the White Bird Crisis Clinic building.

The fire was coming from the back side of the house, which was partially boarded up, according to Paskett. There were no injuries, and people appeared to be evacuating after the fire broke out, Paskett said.

In total five fire engines, two ladder trucks, three chief vehicles and two ambulances responded to assist.

Because the house is over 100 years old and the fire spread inside the walls quickly, it required a larger response, Paskett said. Firefighters had to open up the walls and ceiling to extinguish the fire, he added. The fire was under control at 9:21 a.m., according to department spokesperson Kelsey Hunter.

Mill Street and 12th Avenue were closed near the fire while authorities investigated.

The cause of the fire has not been determined yet, Paskett said. A fire marshal was investigating the scene Monday morning. The extensive fire damage was mostly contained to the back of the house, he said.
