Firefighters extinguishing fire at scrap yard in downtown Phoenix; no one hurt

Phoenix firefighters responded to a debris fire that ignited at a Pull-N-Save auto parts store next to a railroad near 27th Avenue and Van Buren Street on Tuesday afternoon.

A plume of black smoke could be seen rising from the fire after 3:15 p.m. The fire department's regional dispatch center displayed dozens of units responding to the fire.

Footage from a Fox 10 news helicopter showed firefighters using multiple hoses to extinguish the blaze, which appeared to be contained and reduced to a smolder by 3:50 p.m.

Cpt. Evan Gammage, a department spokesperson, said firefighters had made significant progress toward extinguishing the fire as of 4:15 p.m. Gammage said an employee called for help after noticing smoke and fire in a stack of crushed cars toward the back of the business.

Firefighters were still working to extinguish the blaze and determine its cause. There were no reported injuries.
