Fire breaks out at New Bedford three-family home where 23 dogs were living

Firefighters battled a blaze at a three-family home in New Bedford where 23 dogs were living, the fire department said.

Firefighters were called to 60 Cove St. at 12:19 p.m. and found visible fire at the scene.

Tenants were trying to save as many dogs as possible, and one woman was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital for possible smoke inhalation, according to the fire department.

As of Saturday afternoon, 15 dogs were confirmed to be alive, five were found dead and three were missing, the department said. Firefighters are searching for the remaining dogs.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion.

The fire is under investigation. Eight adults and five children are displaced and are being helped by the American Red Cross.
