Finding Alice star Keeley Hawes says she "can't be responsible" for viewers' reactions to the new ITV drama.

The six-part series, which premiered tonight on ITV, tells the darkly comic story of a grieving woman named Alice (Hawes), who's hit by a storm of secrets, debt and criminality after the accidental death of her husband Harry.

He dies after falling down the stairs in their newly-finished dream house, a weird and wonderful yet impractical abode designed by Harry himself. Her partner of 20 years is no longer around, and now she doesn't know how to work the garage doors. Worst still, it appears her husband was hiding an awful lot from her.

During a recent Q&A for the series, Hawes was asked if she felt any responsibility in depicting a grieving character, something many viewers will relate to.

"Quite often you do feel responsible on something like Honour [her previous, true-life detective series for ITV]. There was a huge responsibility to those real people," she told Digital Spy and other media.

In reference to her upcoming film To Olivia, she continued: "I've just played Patricia Neal and I do feel a responsibility to the Dahl family and to her children and grandchildren.

"But Alice is a unique creation and, while I really hope that some people will relate to her and find something within her reaction to her grief, and that may help them, I can't be responsible for people's grief because grief is unique to all of us.

"The way that we all experience grief, be it for a parent or a child or a pet, it's unique to all of us and all of our situations. I can’t be responsible for that, but I hope people relate."

Finding Alice also stars former Coronation Street star Nigel Havers, Absolutely Fabulous legend Joanna Lumley and Versailles's George Webster.

Finding Alice continues next Sunday (January 24) on ITV at 9pm.
