Fila RTW Fall 2021

For its 110th anniversary, Fila conscripted British stylist Katie Grand to add her creative spin to archival pieces dating as far back as 1972, when the Italian company made its foray into the activewear arena. Grand, who visited the brand’s headquarters before last fall’s lockdowns, experimented with sports uniforms from several disciplines and turned them into casual attire with fashion credibility.

The look: Activewear spun into pieces for everyday life with street cred, worked in a restrained color palette of white, black, red and navy — all nuances that are part of the brand’s DNA.

Quote of note: “The archive pieces all looked so modern — like they could be from now — the logo is so iconic my job was very easy,” Grand said.

Standout pieces: Catsuits reminiscent of professional skiers’ uniforms with a glossy surface in a variety of saturated color combinations, a logo cropped top and short-shorts exuding a slight cheerleader vibe, a midi skirt with a sweatshirt-like hemline paired with a rib-knit top and a one-shouldered crop top nodding to swimsuits and paired with basic sweatpants.

Takeaway: Grand had fun plundering the Fila archives and managed to view this sports brand through the lens of contemporary fashion and streetwear. Happy anniversary Fila!
