Fightin Phils infielder Bryson Stott wins Paul Owens Award

Sep. 17—Reading Fightin Phils infielder Bryson Stott has been named the winner of the Paul Owens Award by the Philadelphia Phillies.

The honor goes to the top position player and top pitcher in the Phillies minor league organization. Jean Cabrera of the rookie-level Dominican Summer League was named the Pitcher of the Year.

Stott, 23, split time this summer between High-A Jersey Shore and Double-A Reading. He made the jump in levels after starting at second base for the National League in this summer's Futures Game at Coors Field.

At Reading, Stott has batted .296 with 22 doubles, two triples, 10 home runs and 36 RBIs. He entered Friday night's game at Binghamton with the third-highest batting average among qualifying Double-A Northeast hitters this season.

Stott, a Las Vegas native, was recently named the No. 100 prospect in all of baseball by MLB.com. Stott was selected by the Phillies in the first round (No. 14 overall) of the 2019 MLB Draft out of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

This season at Reading, Stott played four games at second base, four at third and 70 at shortstop. He has committed just five errors in 275 chances and has helped turn 25 double plays.

Between Jersey Shore and Reading, Stott has batted .294 with 26 doubles, 15 home runs and 46 RBIs.

"Bryson is a true baseball player, which is the ultimate compliment," said Reading manager Shawn Williams. "He does everything to help the team win. Bryson is great teammate, plays the game the right way and is a great player in all areas."

Stott, a left-handed hitter, was named Phillies Minor League Hitter of the Month in May and August.

The Paul Owens Award was instituted in 1986 and is named for the late Paul Owens, who spent 48 years in the Phillies organization as a scout, farm director, general manager, manager and senior advisor. Other former Reading players to win the award include Alec Bohm, Pat Burrell, Ryan Howard and Rhys Hoskins.

The players will receive their awards at Citizens Bank Park on Monday before the Phillies' 7:05 p.m. game against the Baltimore Orioles.
