Fiancé wins NC lottery prize months before the wedding, saving his in-laws thousands
The first thing Austin Dubisar did when he won the North Carolina lottery was call his fiancée.
“She didn’t believe me,” he told North Carolina lottery officials. “She said, ‘Take a picture and send it to me.’”
The 42-year-old from Rougemont said he plans to use his winnings to pay for the couple’s April wedding, according to an Oct. 7 news release from the North Carolina Education Lottery.
“I told my future in-laws, ‘Don’t worry about it – I’ll take care of that,’” Dubisar said, according to lottery officials. “They still may try to pay for it but I’m not going to let them.”
Dubisar got his lucky Millionaire Maker ticket for $30 from the Mebane Food Mart on South 5th Street in Mebane, which is about 25 miles from Durham.
After winning, Dubisar said he was in shock.
“I had to keep looking at it again to make sure,” he told lottery officials.
Dubisar collected his prize on Thursday, Oct. 7. He opted to take a $600,000 lump sum, and after federal and state tax witholdings, he took home $426,069.
The winnings will mostly go toward Dubisar’s wedding, but he said he also plans to use some of his prize to pay bills, repair his truck and for his daughter’s college tuition, according to the release.
