FBI Supports Asian Community in Bay Area With More Resources, Hate Crime Investigations

An FBI special agent in charge of the Bay Area met up with Oakland Chinatown community leaders to show the agency’s support amid the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes.

Show of support: Craig Fair said the bureau's ultimate goal is to help the victims get justice and stop violent offenders from hurting community members and deter them from “committing these terrible crimes of hate,” according to KRON4.

  • The agency is investigating hate crime incidents in the Bay Area, but Fair did not go into specific details.

  • Fair said the FBI finds it difficult to prosecute offenders because they need to prove motive and intent.

  • The FBI is increasing its resources to deal with the anti-Asian hate crimes in the Bay Area.


Speak out: To stop the crimes from happening, the FBI is asking the public’s help to report any incidents in the area, Fair said.

  • Last week, the agency launched a public campaign on city trains by putting up banners that read, “Speak Up, Be Heard, Report Now. Report Hate Crimes to the FBI,” NBC Bay Area reported.

  • The bureau is training more agents to help with the hate crime investigations in the area, CBS San Francisco reported.

  • “These special agents will also conduct outreach to community groups to spread awareness, build trust, and encourage additional reporting of hate crimes to the FBI,” the bureau said.
