Man in Broward turnpike crash got out of car and was struck and killed by another driver

A 29-year-old driver involved in a crash with a semi-trailer truck got out of his Honda and was killed by another car Tuesday morning on Florida’s Turnpike, troopers said.

The man, for reasons unknown, was sitting or lying down in the left lane when he was struck, said Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Yanko Reyes.

The tragedy happened in the northbound lanes of the turnpike at the 74 mile post, just south of Glades Road in Boca Raton, at the border of Broward and Palm Beach counties.

After hitting the Lauderdale Lakes man, the 22-year-old driver of the sedan stopped on the right shoulder, according to the FHP. The Pompano Beach woman and her 21-year-old passenger had minor injuries.

The 4:38 a.m. crash closed all northbound lanes in the area for six hours during the investigation. Rush hour traffic came to a halt, with miles of delays. Frustrated drivers made illegal U-turns into the southbound lanes to avoid the backup.

Traffic eventually began to move at a crawl shortly before 8 a.m., but that’s because the Florida Highway Patrol diverted traffic off the exit to the Sawgrass Expressway at the 71 mile post. The lanes reopened shortly before 10:40 a.m.

The Florida Highway Patrol did not disclose the name of the victim or the driver who struck him. The crash remains under investigation.
