Victim identified in Peoria's most recent fatal shooting

PEORIA − Police are investigating the shooting death of a man found in South Peoria late Tuesday night.

Officers were called to the 1400 block of West Kettelle Street for a ShotSpotter alert, according to Semone Roth, a spokeswoman for the Peoria Police Department. The gunfire detection system indicated that four rounds had been fired.

Julius J. Peyton, 49, of Peoria, was identified as the victim by Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood. An autopsy found that Peyton had multiple gunshot wounds throughout his body and died instantly.

According to reports obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, officers were initially sent to an area behind a home on Kettelle. Peyton was found inside of a different house in the same block. Authorities were directed there by a person who had called and asked for a "welfare check."

"Inside the enclosed porch, a male was observed down, fallen into a corner, unresponsive, no pulse. A bullet strikewas observed to the left side of the male's lower stomach," the report said. "The male was moved from the corner of the porch into a face-up prone position where CPR could be administered."

The house had been struck twice by gunfire, the reports stated.

The fatal shooting is the city's 15th homicide of the year. It remains under investigation and no arrests have been made. Anyone with information regarding this homicide is asked to call (309) 494-8367 or Crime Stoppers at (309) 673-9000.
