Easton man spent COVID scheme money on French bulldog breeders, Rolls Royce: US Attorney

Seven people – including two from Brockton and one from Easton – have been arrested in connection with their alleged involvement in a multi-state scheme to fraudulently obtain millions of dollars in Paycheck Protection Program funds, U.S. Attorney Rachael S. Rollins said. Bill Dessaps, 46, of Easton, as well as Wens Herby Mathurin, 26, of Brockton, and Richardson Rhau, 49, also of Brockton, were among those arrested and charged with "conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit unlawful monetary transactions," a statement from the U.S. Attorneys' office said. With the PPP funds he received, Dessaps allegedly issued sham payroll checks to himself and his relatives, purchased a new residence for himself in Easton in his sister’s name, paid $32,000 to French Bulldog breeders and purchased a Rolls Royce.

'Fighting a losing battle': East Bridgewater dam breaches, flooding homes and yards

Peter Blackman, of East Bridgewater, watched the water from Robbins Pond creep up his backyard toward his home on Bixby Drive. "I saw the water coming up into the yard fast," he said. "The water never comes up that quick." Meanwhile, straight across the pond, Lisa Jazon noticed water starting to flood her backyard. Even with the retaining wall that keeps rainwater from pooling into her property, the flood was building. "No matter how much rain we get it doesn't (normally) come into the yard," Jazon said.

A smoking backpack, scooters — lithium-ion battery fires on the rise in Brockton-area

According to reports provided by fire chiefs in Brockton, West Bridgewater, Easton and Raynham, lithium-ion battery related fires have been on the rise recently. In Brockton, there have been three fires in the last eight months that were caused by lithium-ion batteries — two over the summer, and one more recently, on Jan. 5, where firefighters determined the cause of a pair of fires at a multi-family home on Bartlett Street was a charging scooter in the basement that ignited and then reignited. Firefighters also retrieved "over 40 lithium-ion batteries charging various devices" in the basement of that home. Lithium-ion batteries are exceedingly common and work to power and recharge most devices, including phones, tables, laptops, motorized scooters, electric vehicles and more.

B-R standout swimmer Jessie McNeil is headed to the Air Force

Winning streaks don't last forever. Few last longer than a few days or weeks, let alone months. Or years, like the one Jessie McNeil owns. The Bridgewater-Raynham senior swimmer owns a dual-meet win streak that spans back to her freshman year, when former teammate (and current Boston College sophomore swimmer) Megan Kramer outdueled her in the 100 breaststroke. McNeil recently committed to the Air Force Academy to continue her swimming career at the Division 1 level, as well as pursue a future career as pilot, a longtime dream first sparked in the seventh grade.
