Fast start pushes Baxter softball past Dunkerton

Jul. 5—BAXTER — A nine-run first inning was all Baxter needed during its home finale on June 27.

The Bolts' fast start propelled them to a 17-5 win over Dunkerton during an Iowa Star Conference cross-division game.

Baxter was out-hit 8-7 but walked eight times and took advantage of 10 Dunkerton errors.

The seven hits came from five different players and seven players drew at least one walk.

Ally Padget and Mandee Selover led the offense with two hits each. Padget added one run, three RBIs, one walk and one steal and Selover chipped in two runs, one double, three RBIs and two steals.

Emie Tuhn tallied one hit, two runs, two RBIs, one walk and one steal, Allison Colyn doubled, scored two runs and was hit by a pitch and Hannah Huffaker also had a hit.

Lilie Vansice walked twice, scored three runs, had one RBI and stole one base, Elie Tuhn walked once and scored two runs and Lydia Pierce and Klaire Shanks walked once and scored one run.

Kinley Bethards walked once and had one RBI and Hope Good, Caydence Sulzle and Adison Bonney all scored one run.

Bethards earned the win in the circle after allowing five runs — two earned — on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks in four innings.

Jordyn Crisman led Dunkerton (1-17) with two hits and two RBIs.

Janesville 9, Baxter 6

JANESVILLE — A fast start was not enough for Baxter against Janesville on June 30.

The Bolts led 6-3 after three innings, but the Wildcats plated three runs in the fifth and sixth to rally for a 9-6 home win during an Iowa Star Conference cross-division matchup.

The Bolts were limited to five hits and committed six errors.

Emie Tuhn led the Bolts with one hit, one run, one RBI, one walk and one hit by pitch.

Pierce registered one hit, one run, one RBI and one steal, Vansice had one hit, one run and one steal, Elie Tuhn added one hit and one RBI and Shanks had the other hit.

Padget, Selover and Colyn each walked once and scored one run and Colyn had one RBI. Karlee Koehler was hit by a pitch.

Shanks pitched all six innings and took the loss after allowing nine runs — six earned — on 10 hits. She struck out five, walked four and hit four batters.

Janesville (6-19) scored two in the first and one in the second to stay close before the strong finish.

Baxter scored one in the first, two in the second and three in the third.

GMG 12, Baxter 2

GARWIN — The Bolts finalized their conference slate with a 12-2, six-inning loss to GMG on June 28.

The Wolverines led 4-0 after one and scored at least one run in all six innings during the Iowa Star Conference South Division game.

The Bolts (5-19 overall, 5-8 in the conference) had seven hits and were plagued by six errors.

Padget and Pierce both doubled, Vansice had one hit and one RBI and Elie Tuhn tallied one hit and one run. Selover, Shanks and Koehler all had one hit apiece and Colyn walked once and stole one base. Pierce had one steal, too.

Bethards pitched one inning and took the loss after allowing four runs — three earned — on four hits and walked two.

Pierce tossed the final 4 2/3 innings and surrendered eight runs — four earned — on 10 hits. She struck out three and walked one.

GMG finished 7-13 overall and 7-5 in conference play.
