Fast start holds up for DCG against Newton baseball

Jun. 16—DALLAS CENTER — Dallas Center-Grimes plated two runs in each of the first two innings and the four runs held up at home during a win over Newton's baseball team on Monday.

The Cardinals scored single runs in the fourth and fifth to close the gap, but the Mustangs closed out the Little Hawkeye Conference victory.

"It was a good start to the week," Newton baseball coach Brad Kahler said. "We played well enough to win but had a few mistakes that you can't have in a close ball game like that."

Both teams had five hits but DCG (5-10 overall, 5-4 in conference play) collected three doubles and drew four walks. Newton doubled once and was hit by one pitch but did not get the benefit of a walk.

Eli Stewart finished with two hits and one run, Kacey Sommars tallied one hit, two runs and one hit by pitch and Kael Swarts doubled and had an RBI for Newton (3-9, 1-8). Drew Thompson got the other hit.

"Freshman Eli Stewart has found himself in the lineup and is making the most of his opportunities," Kahler said.

Tade Vanderlaan started and took the pitching loss after allowing four earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts and four walks in five innings. Braydon Chance threw the sixth and struck out one.

"Tade did what he always does on the mound and gave us another quality start," Kahler said.

Nate Waknitz had two hits and Clayton Campidilli tallied three RBIs for the Mustangs. Trevor Hamil claimed the pitching win after striking out nine and allowing two earned runs over 6 2/3 innings.
