What a difference a week makes.

Questions surrounded the Boise State football team last weekend. A disastrous loss at UTEP was followed by the firing of offensive coordinator Tim Plough and the transfer of four-year starting quarterback Hank Bachmeier. Familiar name Dirk Koetter was about to call plays for an offense led by redshirt freshman QB Taylen Green against San Diego State in a pivotal Mountain West game at Albertsons Stadium.

After a very shaky first half — only 43 rushing yards and a big zero on the scoreboard, with a 13-0 deficit — the Broncos got rolling. And rolling. And rolling.

Green finished with 105 yards rushing and two touchdowns, and running backs George Holani and Ashton Jeanty combined for 213 yards and three TDs, as Boise State scored a 35-13 victory. The Broncos wound up with 316 yards rushing on 44 carries — a whopping 7.2 yards per carry.

As impressive as that was, the defense kept the team in the game in the first half and then helped turn it, intercepting a pass to start the third quarter. The Broncos’ D limited San Diego State to 114 total yards and forced 10 punts.

Boise State now tries to carry last week’s momentum into Saturday’s game against Fresno State on The Blue, and the Broncos get to welcome a limping league opponent. The Bulldogs (1-3) have beaten only Cal Poly this season and are coming off a loss at UConn, a three-touchdown underdog that had not beaten an FBS opponent since 2019. Fresno also is without starting quarterback Jake Haener.
